Cada año la organización Transformemos Honduras tiene un evento que se llama Costa a Costa, donde alrededor de 100 ciclistas viajan más de 700kms de la Ceiba hasta San Lorenzo, Valle por la educación. TH no es una organización asociada formalmente con el CCM, pero hemos tenido una conexión informal con TH y por eso queremos compartir sobre el tipo de trabajo que hacen desde la perspectiva de una ciclista canadiense que vino por medio del CCM Honduras para participar en el evento.
El propósito principal de la presencia del CCM en Honduras es apoyar el trabajo de nuestros grupos asociados. En el curso de las próximas semanas, estaremos compartiendo historias sobre el trabajo de estos grupos asociados en nuestra serie: Enfoque serial de los grupos asociados. Every year the organization Transformemos Honduras has an event called Coast to Coast, where around 100 cyclists travel more than 700 kms from La Ceiba to San Lorenzo, Valle on behalf of education. TH is not a partner organization with MCC, but we have had an informal connection with TH and for this reason want to share about the type of work that they do from the perspective of a Canadian cyclist who came to participate in the event through the MCC Connecting People’s program.
The primary purpose of MCC’s presence in Honduras is to support the already existing work of our local partner organizations. Over the next few weeks we will share stories about the work of these partner organizations in our Partner Focus series. Trabajo de Transformemos Honduras
Transformemos Honduras (TH) es un movimiento social dirigido por sus miembros, los/as cuales son Iglesias, la sociedad civil e individuos. TH trabaja para mejorar los sistemas de salud y educación vigilando las cuentas del gobierno pues Honduras es considerado uno de los países más corruptos en Latinoamérica y este trabajo debe ser efectuado además de ser un gran reto.

Ellos han identificado y dirigido su atención a las fallas y corrupción en la educación y el sistema publico de salud, lo cual ha hecho que los gobiernos sean obligados a prestar más atención y hacer cambios.
Aquí tenemos un ejemplo en el área de educación: Su investigación ha revelado que hay un gran número de profesores (10.000) adscritos a la nomina los cuales nunca han dado una clase o ni siquiera están calificados para enseñar. Esto significa que una gran suma de dinero ha sido gastada en estos profesores pero el sistema educativo no produce resultados. Transformemos ha diseñado un sistema en el cual padres o monitores pueden informar y decir los/as profesores/as que están en la lista van o no a clase; haciendo que el número de “profesores/as fantasma” y la suma de dinero gastada en la atención publica fuerce al gobierno a responder por ello. Un logro que TH noto fue que hace algunos años, el anterior ministro de educación fue despedido y uno mucho mejor fue puesto en su reemplazo. El año pasado, tuvieron 200 días de escuela seguidos en opuesto a años anteriores donde solo hubo 210 días aproximadamente.
Hallazgos similares han ocurrido en las audiciones a la salud pública en el área de compras de medicamentos; lo que ha hecho que las personas a cargo hayan sido despedidas o puestas en prisión por evidencias de corrupción.
Como resultado de esto, las personas que lideran TH, con quienes tuvimos la oportunidad de hablar, están en peligro personal y no cuentan con guardias de seguridad regularmente. Ellos/as continúan trabajando porque creen considerablemente en la transparencia y la necesidad de revisar la contabilidad del gobierno para alcanzar mejores niveles de éxito en su país.
Evento de ciclismo: Costa a Costa
El recorrido (Costa a Costa) es una manera de dirigir la atención y crear conciencia de TH a todo Honduras, pues el mensaje aun necesita ser llevado a todas las partes de Honduras.
El grupo incluía de 70 a 100 personas. Estuvimos recorriendo cada ciudad como grupo, siendo guiados/as y escoltados/as por la policía y a veces con un megáfono sobre una van hablando acerca del grupo y de TH. De vez en cuando se acercaban medios de comunicación como radio y televisión. Al final, íbamos hasta el centro de la ciudad en donde se realizaban una presentación y una ceremonia.
Allí, se daba una corta presentación sobre TH y algunos/as estudiantes de las ciudades que habían alcanzado grandes logros en distintas áreas de sus clases eran reconocidos y condecorados con algunos presentes monetarios, libros, camisetas y bicicletas. Y aun sin conocer a ninguno/a de estos/as estudiantes o a sus padres, me sentí tan orgullosa y con regocijo por ellos/as y su reconocimiento por el buen trabajo. Se podía notar claramente que era un honor, tanto para los/as estudiantes como para los padres, este reconocimiento.
La presentación usualmente incluía un grupo de danza o una actividad que causaba emoción entre la gente. Através de estas presentaciones, el trabajo de TH se podía notar y muchos padres eran motivados a involucrarse mucho más en la educación de sus hijos através de este trabajo y divertirse!
Conclusiones
Aprendimos que hay muchas maneras en las cuales podemos ayudar, como por ejemplo ser consciente de algunos de sus asuntos y cuando sea apropiado, contactar a nuestro MP local para promover la atención a ellos. Los líderes de TH nos dijeron que a veces la presión del gobierno Canadiense es de hecho una forma efectiva de influenciar cambios en Honduras, de manera que continuaremos en contacto con este trabajo.
Me quedé sorprendida por la manera respetuosa en la que las personas de TH trabajan. Ellos/as trabajan en colaboración con individuos en el gobierno y organizaciones que realmente también quieren un efecto positivo en los resultados en Honduras. Una de las razones de su éxito es que ellos/as han construido y continúan teniendo buenas relaciones de trabajo con organizaciones y padres de familia a nivel local.
Para mi, tanto el recorrido como la experiencia fueron fantásticas, ricas en muchas maneras. Aunque el recorrido en bicicleta fue un reto, disfruté ser capaz de ver al país de esa manera y también poder conocer a algunas personas, construyendo conexiones con personas de diferentes partes. Yo he pensado incluso en volver el próximo año.

So you may be wondering why such a ride exists and what is the reason behind it.
Besides being an amazing way to see and experience the country and bring people together from various places with in and outside of Honduras, Transformemos Honduras has a purpose to this ride.
Transformemos Honduras’ work
Transformemos Honduras (TH) – Let’s Transform Honduras – is a social movement that is driven by its members who are churches, civil society and individuals. TH is working at improving health and education systems by holding the government accountable. Honduras is considered to be the most corrupt country in Latin America so this work is needed and a great challenge.

They have identified and drawn attention to flaws and corruption in the education and public health systems which has lead to governments being obliged to pay attention and make changes.
An example in the area of education: Their research has found that there are large numbers (10,000) of teachers listed on the payroll who have never taught a class and who may not be qualified to teach. This means large amounts of money being spent on these teachers but the education system not producing results. Transformemos has set up a system whereby parents or monitors can report back to say that these teachers on the list have never shown up for class.
Bringing the number of ghost teachers and amount of money spent to the attention of the public forced the government to respond. A success that TH noted was a few years ago the old education minister was fired and a new, much-improved one was put in place. Last year they had a success of having 200 days of school for children as opposed to approx 120 in years before.
Similar kinds of findings have happened in the Public Health audits, in the area of purchasing of medication; revealing this corruption has lead to some firings and jailings of those who have been in charge.
As a result of this, the lead people of TH, whom we had opportunity to have some discussions with, are in danger personally and have body guards with them continually. They continue the work because they believe so strongly in the transparency and the need to hold the government accountable in order to achieve any level of success in their country.
Cycling event: Costa a Costa
The ride (Costa a Costa) is one way of drawing attention to and creating the awareness of TH across Honduras –as the message still needs to reach all areas of Honduras.
The ride included from 70-100 people. We would ride into each city as a group, being led and escorted by police and sometimes a loudspeaker on a van talking about the ride and TH, drawing attention to this unusual sight. Often TV and radio media where there with cameras and microphones as well. We would ride to the town center where a presentation and a ceremony was held.
Here a brief talk about TH was made and students from that city who achieved highest marks in various areas of their classes were acknowledged and awarded with some gifts of money, books, a T shirt and a bicycle. Even though I didn’t know any of these students or their parents, I felt such a pride and joy for them as the students were acknowledged for their hard work. It was easy to see that this was an honour for both the students and the parent to be recognized in this way.
The presentation usually included a dance group or an activity which got attention and some excitement in the crowd. Through these presentations, the work of TH was briefly highlighted and parents were encouraged to become involved in their childrens’ education through this work. …And we had fun!
Conclusions
We have heard that there are ways that we can help even here. One such way is being aware of some of their issues and when it is appropriate, to contact our local MP to raise the attention to them. The leaders of TH have told us that sometimes this pressure from Canadian government is actually effective in influencing change in Honduras, so we hope to keep in touch with this work.
I was very impressed by the respectful way in which the people in TH work. They work in collaboration with the individuals in government and organizations who also really want to effect positive outcomes in Honduras. One of the reasons for their success is that they have built and continue to have positive working partnerships with organizations and parents locally.
For me the ride and the experience was fantastic –rich in many ways. Although the ride was challenging I loved being able to see the country in that way and also getting to know some of the people , building connections with people from different places. I have even thought about doing the ride maybe next year.
